Your First 7 Days as a UGC Creator: A Day-by-Day Plan
Starting something new is exciting, and a little overwhelming. So let’s make it simple. This plan takes you from “I want to try UGC” to “I’m a UGC creator with a portfolio and pitches out” in seven days, with about an hour or two each day.
You don’t need followers, gear or experience. You need your phone, a few products you already own, and a willingness to hit record.
Day 1: Set up your foundation
Today is about clarity.
- Pick your starting niche. Choose one or two categories you genuinely use: skincare, home, coffee, pets, fitness, tech, parenting. (Stuck? Read the best UGC niches.)
- Write your one-liner. For example: “Dog mom and home-organization nerd making real-life UGC for pet and home brands.”
- Pick three products you already own in your niche. These become your first spec videos.
- Create a professional email if you don’t have one, using your name.
- Create your creator profile where brands and programs can find you.
Day 2: Learn the shapes of UGC
Spend today studying, then writing.
- Watch 20–30 UGC-style ads and creator videos in your niche. Notice the first two seconds, the pacing and how the product appears.
- Learn the classic formats: testimonial, demo, unboxing, problem and solution, before and after, “3 reasons why,” routine.
- For each of your three products, choose a format and write five hooks. Example: “I didn’t think a lint roller could change my life.”
- Write a short script for each video: hook, the problem, the product in action, the result, a simple close.
Day 3: Film your three spec videos
- Set up by a window, phone at eye level on a tripod or stack of books, lens wiped, do-not-disturb on.
- Film every line of your scripts two or three times.
- Film your best hooks several ways.
- Capture 5–10 short B-roll clips per product: unboxing, close-ups, in use, results.
Don’t aim for perfect. Aim for finished. (More tips in how to film UGC on a phone.)
Day 4: Edit
- Install one free mobile editing app and learn the basics: cut, captions, add B-roll.
- Edit each video to 15–45 seconds, hook first.
- Cut every pause and stumble.
- Add clear captions, kept away from the top and bottom edges.
- Export in high quality, vertical, without watermarks.
- Name files clearly, like “YourName_Product_Testimonial_30s.mp4”.
Watch each one on your phone with the sound off, then with sound on. Would you keep scrolling? Tweak the hook if so.
Day 5: Build your portfolio
- Put your three videos in one shareable place that opens fast on a phone.
- Add your one-liner, niche, country, email and handles.
- Label spec work honestly (for example “Spec video, not a paid partnership”).
- Add a short line under each video: format, length, what you did.
- Ask one friend to watch all three and tell you which hook grabbed them most.
- Test the link logged out.
(See what to include in a UGC portfolio.)
Day 6: Apply and pitch
Time to put yourself out there.
- Apply to 10 or more brand gifting or creator programs in your niche. (See how to find brand gifting programs.)
- Find contacts for 10 brands you love and send 5 short, personal pitches with your portfolio link. (Templates are in how to pitch brands for gifting.)
- Start a tracking sheet: brand, contact, date, status, follow-up date.
Day 7: Rates, rules and your next week
- Read up on rates and write down a starting structure: base rate per video, a fee for paid-ad usage, a fee for exclusivity, and bundle prices for 3 and 5 videos. (Our UGC rates guide rounds up public estimates.)
- Learn the usage-rights basics so you know what to ask before you film. (See UGC contracts and usage rights.)
- Save a simple invoice template.
- Send 5 more pitches.
- Plan next week: one new spec video, ten applications, five pitches, follow-ups on anything older than a week.
That’s it. You’re a UGC creator now. Really.
What to expect after week one
Replies take time. Some brands answer in days, some in weeks, and many never do. That’s completely normal and has nothing to do with your worth. Creators who keep a steady rhythm (new videos, new applications, kind follow-ups) are the ones who build momentum.
A few habits that help:
- Make one new video every week. Your portfolio gets stronger fast.
- Celebrate every yes, even a small gifted one.
- Over-deliver on your first collaborations: on time, clean files, a friendly thank-you.
- Disclose paid or gifted posts on your own channels, as the U.S. FTC’s influencer guide explains.
- Stay curious. Study what’s working in your niche every week.
Your 7-day checklist
- Niche and one-liner chosen
- Three products picked
- Hooks and scripts written
- Three spec videos filmed and edited
- Portfolio link live and tested
- 10+ program applications sent
- 10 pitches sent and tracked
- Rate structure and invoice template saved

Make day 1 easier
Unresourced is the anti-agency agency: a creator platform with the support of a management team, and none of the strings. One account, and you can apply to brand gifting programs in one tap. No non-compete. No exclusivity. You keep working with any brand and any platform you like, and the creators who show up and do great work get looked after.
