How to Start UGC With No Followers (A Real, Step-by-Step Plan)

Here’s the good news, said plainly: UGC is one of the few corners of the creator world where your follower count barely matters. You can start today, from zero, with the phone already in your hand.

That’s because UGC (user-generated content) isn’t about your audience. It’s about your content. A brand hires a UGC creator to make videos that look and feel like a real person talking about a product, and then the brand posts those videos on its own accounts, its website or its ads. Your job is to make something that works for them. Whether 12 people or 120,000 people follow you doesn’t change how good that video is.

So let’s skip the “I need to grow first” worry and get you moving.

Why followers aren’t the point

An influencer is paid to reach their audience. A UGC creator is paid to make content. Those are different products. When a brand buys UGC, what it is really buying is:

None of those require an audience. They require practice, a portfolio and a bit of courage.

Step 1: Pick a lane (you can change it later)

Choose one or two niches you actually live in: skincare, coffee, fitness, pets, home, tech accessories, baby and parenting, food, fashion. Brands want creators who look natural with their product, and it’s much easier to sound genuine about things you really use.

Write a one-line description of yourself as a creator. For example: “Busy mom of two who tests home and kitchen products in real life.” That line goes on your portfolio, your pitches and your profile.

Step 2: Film 3 spec videos with products you already own

A spec video is a practice ad: a UGC-style video you make for a brand that hasn’t hired you (yet). It is the single most useful thing you can do as a brand-new creator, because it gives brands something to look at.

Look around your home and pick three products that fit your niche. For each one, make a 15–45 second vertical video in a different classic format:

Start every video with a hook (the first line or visual that stops the scroll), show the product clearly, and end with a simple reason to try it. Film each line a few times so you have options in the edit.

Only use these as portfolio pieces. Don’t present a spec video as paid work for a brand, and don’t run it as an ad for them.

Step 3: Set up a simple, clean filming spot

You don’t need gear to start. Face a window for soft, even light. Put your phone at eye level on a stack of books or a cheap tripod. Find a quiet room, wipe the lens, and film in 1080p or 4K at 30fps, vertical. A small clip-on mic helps later, but a quiet room is enough for day one. (Our guide to filming UGC on a phone goes deeper.)

Step 4: Build a one-link portfolio

Put your three spec videos in one place you can share with a single link: a free website builder page, a shared folder with clear file names, or your creator profile on a platform. Add your one-liner, your niche, a contact email and your general location (brands shipping products need to know which country you’re in).

Keep it short. A brand manager should be able to see who you are and watch your best video in under a minute.

Step 5: Start with gifting to get real brand reps

Your first brand collaborations will often be gifted: the brand sends you a product and you create content. That’s a great way to get real brand names into your portfolio, practice working to a brief, and build relationships that can turn into paid work.

Before you agree to anything, get clear on what the brand expects in return (how many videos, whether you post them, and where they will use them). If you post sponsored or gifted content on your own channels, disclose it. The U.S. FTC’s plain-language guide for influencers says to disclose the relationship if you got anything of value to mention a product, including free or discounted products.

Step 6: Pitch, apply and repeat

Now put yourself in front of brands, every week:

Most creators hear “no” or nothing at all, many times, before the first yes. That’s normal. Each new video makes your portfolio stronger, and each pitch gets easier to write.

Your zero-follower starter checklist

The mindset that makes it work

Treat this like a craft, not a lottery. Your first video won’t be your best, and that’s exactly how it should be. Make the next one a little better: a sharper hook, better light, a cleaner edit. Creators who keep showing up, keep shipping and stay kind to brand teams build momentum fast.

You don’t need permission, an audience or an expensive setup. You need three good videos and a way to get them in front of the right brands.

Sources

Start from zero, with a little help

Unresourced is the anti-agency agency: a creator platform with the support of a management team, and none of the strings. One account, and you can apply to brand gifting programs in one tap.
