TikTok Shop Affiliate for Beginners: How It Works and How to Start
TikTok Shop requirements change. Facts here come from TikTok Shop’s U.S. guides as read on October 18, 2026; check the linked pages for current terms.
TikTok Shop’s affiliate program lets creators earn a commission when viewers buy products through their videos, LIVEs or affiliate links. For UGC creators, it’s a natural next step: you already know how to show a product well on camera, and now that skill can earn on your own account too.
Here’s a clear, beginner-friendly walkthrough, based on TikTok Shop’s own U.S. creator guides as we read them on October 18, 2026. TikTok updates its rules often, so always double-check the current requirements on TikTok’s official pages (linked under Sources) before you apply.
Who can join (U.S.)
According to TikTok Shop’s U.S. creator guides, to become an Affiliate creator you need to:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be based in the United States
- Have at least 1,000 followers
- Not be a government, politician or political party account
- Complete age confirmation and identity verification
- Follow TikTok Shop’s content policy, Community Guidelines and creator code of conduct
TikTok also describes other creator types that can be bound to a specific seller’s shop (such as official and marketing accounts) with no minimum follower count, but those work differently from the open affiliate marketplace. If you’re under 1,000 followers, keep building with UGC and your own content; you’ll be ready when you cross the line.
The pilot program for newer creators
TikTok’s U.S. guide says that Affiliate creators with fewer than 5,000 followers start in a 30-day Creator Pilot Program, with some limits while they build a track record. One example from the guide: creators with fewer than 5,000 followers can post up to 5 shoppable videos per week. Graduation, per the guide, generally means at least 30 days in the program plus reaching the follower threshold and passing TikTok Shop’s compliance and security checks. Check TikTok’s page for the exact, current terms.
Think of the pilot as training wheels. Use those limited shoppable slots on your very best ideas.
How you earn
- You add products from TikTok Shop’s product marketplace to your showcase.
- You make shoppable videos, go LIVE, or share affiliate links featuring those products.
- When a viewer places an order through your content, you can earn a commission.
The commission rate is set by the seller for each product, and TikTok shows an estimated commission before you promote. To get paid, TikTok asks you to set up a commission account, which needs your personal and tax information. Earnings depend entirely on sales, so there’s no guaranteed income.
Open vs target collaborations
Sellers can invite creators in two main ways, according to TikTok Shop’s seller guides:
- Open collaborations: a product is available to eligible affiliates at a standard commission.
- Target collaborations: a seller invites specific creators, sometimes with different terms.
Sellers can also offer free or refundable products through the Affiliate Center. Requesting free products you genuinely want to feature is a great way to build your content library, much like brand gifting.
Picking your first products
- Stay in your niche, so your audience (and the algorithm) understands what you’re about.
- Choose products you’d actually use and can demonstrate clearly.
- Look for products with good reviews and a strong shop rating, since returns and complaints hurt everyone.
- Favor items with a visible result: a before-and-after, a satisfying demo, a clear problem solved.
Making shoppable videos that work
Everything you know about UGC applies here:
- Hook fast. Open with the problem, the result or a surprising moment.
- Show, don’t tell. Get the product in hand and in action early.
- Be honest. Real reactions build trust, and trust is what sells.
- Keep it tight. Cut pauses, add captions, end with a simple prompt to check out the product.
- Stick to approved claims. Especially in beauty, wellness and supplements, describe your own experience and avoid promises of results.
Disclosure
When you promote products for a commission, disclose it. TikTok Shop has its own rules for shoppable content, and the U.S. FTC’s guide for influencers says to disclose the relationship if you got anything of value to mention a product, which includes commissions and free products.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Promoting too many unrelated products at once
- Reading a product description instead of showing the product
- Ignoring TikTok Shop’s content policies (a violation can block your progress)
- Expecting overnight income; most creators build momentum slowly
- Deleting or editing shoppable links after posting without checking TikTok’s rules
How affiliate fits with UGC
UGC and affiliate work feed each other. UGC teaches you to make content that sells. Affiliate content shows brands what your videos can do for real. Gifting relationships give you products to feature. Many creators run all three at once, and nothing about joining TikTok Shop stops you from working with brands anywhere else.
